Remarkable Outcomes
In Kansas, bioscience researchers and businesses have a partner dedicated to their success: the Kansas Bioscience Authority.
The KBA is investing $581 million in the dynamic bioscience industry to stimulate job growth, attract private venture capital, and
increase research and business investments in the state.
With a focus on Kansas’ areas of bioscience strength, and investments throughout the business cycle, the results are remarkable:
-
A national site selection magazine highlighted Kansas’ success in its Top 10 list of states in the nation for biotechnology,
ranking Kansas alongside powerhouses such as California, Massachusetts, and Illinois. Kansas ranked number 4 in the nation for
state bioscience investments and number 5 for bioscience research funding.
-
The federal government chose Kansas for a new $650 million national research facility to protect the American food supply and
further bolster the animal health corridor that is already home to 34 percent of the $16.8 billion global animal health industry.
-
Eminent scholars are coming to Kansas, business startups are spinning out of the academic community, and companies are growing
and expanding.
In fiscal year 2009, the KBA committed more than $177 million to 32 bioscience projects. These investments bring total commitments to
$225 million since the authority’s inception — helping to stimulate
1,130 jobs, $94 million in capital expenditures, $38 million in research funding, and $12 million in equity investments.
We are creating an environment for success, and bioscience researchers and businesses are making great things happen. Indeed, as other
states pull back from innovation investments, Kansas is continuing to vault ahead, at just the right time in the competitive
marketplace.
