Heartland BioVentures
Heartland BioVentures is the KBA's business-assistance program designed to facilitate risk capital investment in Kansas bioscience companies. The principal goal of BioVentures is to provide assistance to early stage bioscience firms to fundamentally address business, technology, management and other strategic issues critical to their success and, thus, improve their access to venture capital, i.e. make them “venture-ready.”
The services, resources and networks of BioVentures and its partners are directed to help bioscience and health care startups develop products, raise capital and go to market. Specific services include management counsel and recruitment, clinical collaborations, business development, and assist companies gain access to capital and other start-up funding.
Program Goals
- Provide assistance to early stage bioscience firms;
- Support bioscience businesses in addressing fundamental technology, management and other strategy issues critical to their success;
- Improve the ability of bioscience businesses to access venture capital; and
- Develop into a source of quality deal flow for established bioscience venture capital investors.
Eligibility
BioVentures will work primarily with bioscience innovators, university technology transfer directors and bioscience risk capital investors doing business or seeking investments in Kansas. Like a venture fund, the BioVentures staff will prudently invest time and expertise in emerging bioscience companies and entrepreneurs that demonstrate significant growth potential in the following areas:
- Animal health
- Bioenergy
- Biomaterials
- Drug discovery and development
- Plant biology
Key Evaluation Criteria
To qualify to become a BioVentures client company, entrepreneurs must demonstrate they have the potential to start, operate and build a successful technology company. BioVentures staff will evaluate applicants based in part on the following criteria:
- Incorporated Kansas bioscience company with 50 employees or fewer
- Management team partially or fully in place
- Proof-of-concept documented
- Intellectual property protected and assigned to company
- Complete business plan
