Areas of Expertise
In Kansas, scientists, researchers, and businesses have found tremendous success in bioscience. In doing so, they have created strong areas of expertise, which have become great growth opportunities for further research and business in Kansas.
Those areas of particular growth potential in Kansas include:
-
Animal health: the production, marketing, and use of domestic animals in agriculture, entertainment, and companionship
-
Bioenergy: creating fuel out of biological material, often plant matter such as corn or switchgrass
-
Biomaterials: the use of materials in a living structure, often through dentistry, orthopedic surgery, or drug delivery, e.g. joint replacements, dental implants, artificial heart valves
-
Drug discovery and delivery: the process of identifying and/or refining drugs for use in medicine and pharmacology and delivering those drugs in ways that most effectively reach intended targets in the body
-
Plant biology: the production, marketing, utilization, and study of plants and plant materials, including agronomy, crop science, entomology, and plant breeding
The possibilities for success in these sectors are endless, and the Kansas Bioscience Authority is committed to bolstering growth
in areas of strength. In 2008 and 2009, we are aggressively advancing this goal through the creation of Kansas Bioscience Centers
of Innovation, which will take advantage of existing bioscience institutions and create specialized research centers focused on
the state’s areas of expertise and further commercialization opportunities.

“The KBA’s commitments have been important to us in our decision to come to Kansas, not just the monetary amount, but the consistent support as well.”
