Michael Borgman
Advanced Materials Engineer and Research Scientist
MD Borgman Consulting

Michael Borgman has been an engineering professional in the field of advanced materials since 1977. During his career, he has been involved in the development of numerous structural systems composed of advanced materials and has been instrumental in development of manufacturing methods to produce them.

From 1977 through 1982, Mike was involved in the development of a composites start-up company in Greeley, Colo., which produced helicopter portable seismic laboratories; rugged lightweight truck mounted portable data recording; and well logging laboratories. As production manager, he was responsible for leadership of all manufacturing operations and development activities.

From 1982 through 1988, Mike was an engineering researcher and test lab engineer for the Composite Materials Research Group (CMRG) at the University of Wyoming. His responsibilities included pure materials research for entities such as NASA and the U.S. Air Force and expansion of CMRG laboratory capabilities.

In 1988, Mike joined General Dynamics - Convair in San Diego, where he worked as a composites structural analyst, researcher, and manufacturing consultant. In 1989, General Dynamics invited Mike to transfer from San Diego to the Fort Worth, Tex., division research space applications of advanced materials. While there, he explored advanced materials topics such as cryogenic applications of graphite epoxy composites and ultra-high temperature applications of titanium matrix silicone carbide materials.

Since 1995, Mike has worked within the Wichita, Kan., aerospace community, where he has provided composites engineering expertise to a number of local aerospace firms and research entities. He also has been called on by regulatory agencies to assist in the advancement of standardization of advanced materials application in aircraft.

Mike is formally educated in the strength analysis of structures and in laboratory experimentation to assess the long term performance characteristics of structural components produced from advanced materials. He earned a BSME with honors from the University of Wyoming in 1988 and an MSME from Southern Methodist University in Dallas in 1995. He is well known in the field of aerospace composites and has spoken at forums nationally and internationally. He is establishing a sole proprietorship consulting firm, MD Borgman Consulting, in Derby, Kan.

Mike and his wife, Cher, have a daughter, Chelsea, and a son, Chance. Both children attend Kansas colleges. While family and career are his highest priorities, when time allows, Mike enjoys outdoor adventure sports such as skiing, hiking, rock climbing, and motorcycling.

“We are very excited about the collaboration that has taken place with the Kansas Bioscience Authority and are looking forward to bringing new job opportunities to the local community with this important investment in our business.”
