Dan Watkins
Attorney at Law
Dan Watkins is an attorney in private practice in Lawrence, Kan., serving an array of regional and national clients in business matters and governmental affairs. Since 1998, he also has specialized in the management of financially troubled insurance companies. Dan is designated as a certified insurance receiver by the International Association of Insurance Receivers.
Prior to private practice, Dan served in Kansas government for nearly 10 years, as chief of the criminal division in the Office of the Attorney General, chief counsel at the Kansas Department of Transportation, and chief of staff to the Governor. For the past seven years, he has served as chairman and vice chairman of the Kansas Development Finance Authority and Kansas Housing Resource Corporation.
Dan was a founder of a start-up information technology company that was purchased by a national IT company. He has served as chairman of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, Friends of the Lied Center and the Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center. He also serves as a member of the board of the MidAmerican MS Society.
Dan received his undergraduate degree in mathematics from St. Mary of the Plains College and his law degree from the University of Kansas. He served as a VISTA volunteer and VISTA supervisor in Broward County, Fla., for three years after college before enrolling at KU Law School.
Dan and his wife, Phyllis, are the proud parents of four grown sons.
